What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition causing facial redness and inflammation, mostly in fair-skinned adults. Women are more susceptible, but men may experience severe cases. It begins with flushing and leads to persistent redness on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin, often with enlarged blood vessels, acne-like eruptions, and skin thickening. Though incurable, treatments can effectively manage rosacea symptoms. Experts may suggest topical medications, oral medications, laser treatments, avoiding triggers, or some combination of those strategies.

Rosacea presents with many levels of symptoms:

  • Persistent Redness: Facial redness that resembles a blush or sunburn and does not fade is the most common sign of rosacea.
  • Skin Thickening: Excess tissue may cause skin thickening, especially on the nose (rhinophyma), potentially leading to facial disfigurement and nasal airflow issues when severe.
  • Flushing: Early signs of rosacea include frequent facial redness with a sensation of heat or burning.
  • Bumps and Pimples: Small red bumps or pus-filled pimples develop, resembling acne. These may burn or sting.
  • Visible Blood Vessels: Prominent small blood vessels (telangiectasia) appear on the cheeks, nasal bridge, and central face.
  • Eye Irritation: Ocular rosacea can cause irritated, watery, or bloodshot eyes; red, swollen eyelids with accumulated crust and scale; and visible blood vessels along the lid. Severe cases can cause corneal damage and vision loss if untreated.
  • Burning or Stinging: Sensations like burning, stinging, itching, or tightness may occur on the face.
  • Swelling: Facial swelling can happen with other rosacea signs or alone. Raised red patches or plaques might develop without affecting nearby skin.
  • Dryness: Central facial skin may be rough and scaly, even if patients report otherwise oily skin.

If rosacea causes physical discomfort or concerns about your changing appearance, don’t wait to schedule a consultation. Our experts can evaluate your specific situation and suggest the appropriate treatment plan.

What Causes Rosacea?

Rosacea is often found in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition, but environmental factors can also play a role. It is not contagious, and it’s also not caused by poor skin hygiene.  Symptoms can also worsen due to individual triggers, leading to “flare-ups”.

Factors that can exacerbate rosacea symptoms and lead to flare-ups include:

  • Exposure to extreme temperatures, wind, or sunlight
  • Emotional stress
  • Certain foods and beverages, including spicy foods and alcohol
  • Other factors include cosmetics, medications, and even harmless mites that may be found on humans

Regular treatments can help manage symptoms and prevent or minimize flare-ups. It’s important to identify your unique triggers to avoid them if possible, as this is a significant part of managing your rosacea.

When Should You Seek Treatment for Rosacea?

osacea typically starts after age 30 with facial redness on the cheeks, nose, or chin that mimics sunburn or blushing. This redness recurs, becomes more pronounced, and can lead to visible blood vessels. Without treatment, bumps and pimples may develop and worsen over time. In severe cases, especially in men, the nose may swell and enlarge. Some individuals might also experience irritated, watery, or bloodshot eyes.

If you suspect you may have rosacea, don’t ignore your symptoms and seek medical attention. To address this chronic medical disorder, consult an experienced provider like Dr. Sanniec, who can assess your condition and create a personalized management plan. This may involve medications, skin-care products, avoiding triggers, and other treatments.

Rosacea Treatments in Mesa, AZ

Although there’s no cure for rosacea, you can improve your skin’s appearance and comfort. Treatments are personalized and tailored to each patient’s needs as symptoms vary; typically, they include self-care and medications.

We may prescribe a range of oral and topical medications to address the various signs and symptoms associated with rosacea. Light therapies may be prescribed specifically to manage redness. To bring bumps and pimples under immediate control, initial treatment often involves oral and topical therapies, followed by long-term anti-inflammatory treatment to maintain remission.

Light Therapy

Laser therapy and other gentle, light-based therapies can remove visible blood vessels or correct nose disfigurement. Anti-inflammatory medications may treat ocular rosacea, with recommendations from an eye doctor.

Surgical Management

Rosacea rarely requires surgical management, but particularly if nose disfigurement(rhinophyma) isn’t responding well to non-surgical treatments, Dr. Sanniec may propose surgical reconstruction. However, Dr. Sanniec is not quick to suggest surgery, and every measure will be tried, including oral and topical medications and non-invasive therapy, before he considers surgery.

Skincare Routine

Our experts will work with patients to ensure their skincare routine suits their rosacea. A gentle routine can help control symptoms. Use a mild, non-abrasive cleanser, lukewarm water, and blot dry with a soft towel to avoid pulling and tugging.

Apply non-irritating skincare products and protect the skin from sun exposure with a sunscreen (SPF 50+). Choose mild formulations for sensitive skin, and mineral sunscreens with zinc or titanium dioxide.

Green concealers or green-tinted foundations can help to counter redness and conceal rosacea. Use skin-tone foundations with natural yellow tones, avoiding pink or orange hues.

Lifestyle Management

Besides long-term medical treatment, rosacea patients can manage their condition by avoiding lifestyle and environmental triggers. Since triggers vary for each person, keeping a diary of activities and noting flare-ups can help identify personal factors.
