What Is a Cyst?

Cysts are a benign skin conditions characterized by pockets of soft, movable tissue filled with proteins, fluids, or other substances. They can develop anywhere on the body, including the face, back, chest, and scalp. While cysts are often benign and asymptomatic, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to discomfort or pain.

Cysts are fluid-filled lumps that form beneath the skin. They can form when a hair follicle is blocked or for many other reasons. Most cysts have an opening at the skin’s surface (the punctum), through which fluid may drain.

Skin cysts—sebaceous or epidermal cysts—appear as lumps or bumps under the skin. Most are benign, but some may be cancerous, so it’s important to have your cyst examined by a medical professional.

If a cyst becomes inflamed or infected, causes pain, and discomfort, or grows rapidly, you should seek medical attention right away. Treatments vary, depending on the type of cyst and its size and location. Our experts can evaluate your specific situation and suggest the appropriate treatment plan.

What Causes a Cyst?

Several factors can contribute to the development of a cyst, including:

  • Blocked ducts or glands
  • Infections
  • Trauma
  • Genetic conditions
  • Hormonal imbalances

Small cysts generally do not require treatment, but they can be removed for cosmetic reasons, changes in size, or if they cause discomfort. Larger cysts may need removal if they become inflamed or infected. When a cyst grows large enough to be noticeable, it is common to have it removed through a cosmetic procedure.

Cyst removal treatments include:

  • Drainage or removal: Cysts may be punctured and drained or surgically removed if they cause discomfort.
  • Medications: Infected cysts may require antibiotics or cortisone injections, which may shrink the cyst.

Cyst removal is done in our office using a local anesthetic and, if needed, a sedative. During your consultation, Dr. Sanniec will discuss the surgical plan, procedure length, and sedation options.

What to Expect After the Treatment

Cyst removal is generally a straightforward outpatient procedure. It involves making an incision to drain the cyst, removing the sac, and then closing the incision with sutures. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour, with patients returning home the same day.

There is no recovery period after cyst removal; however, you may need to avoid strenuous activities for a few days to weeks. You may feel sore for a few days, which can be alleviated with ice and over-the-counter pain relief. Dr. Sanniec will give you aftercare instructions and schedule follow-up visits.

When You Should Consider Cyst Removal

Some cysts can resolve naturally, particularly if they are small, asymptomatic, and do not cause cosmetic issues. However, many cysts may persist and require medical intervention, such as removal or drainage. If a cyst is bothersome, inflamed, or increasing in size, it’s important to consult an experienced dermatologist, like one of the providers at Valley Dermatology, for evaluation and appropriate management.

Although cysts are typically harmless and do not require treatment, consult a medical professional if they cause pain, discomfort, or if you have concerns regarding their appearance or rapid growth. We can evaluate your specific situation and recommend an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Reasons to seek medical attention for a cyst include:

  • Inflamed or infected cysts that have become tender or painful to the touch
  • Ruptured cysts can cause inflammation, swelling, redness, pain, and may lead to infection
  • Cysts that grow rapidly or change in appearance
  • Cysts located in sensitive areas that press on nerves or cause discomfort
  • If you experience symptoms like fever, weight loss, or night sweats
  • If they cause you concern

It is not recommended to squeeze or pop a cyst personally. Doing so may result in infection, scarring, and potentially making your cyst worse.  It is generally best to have cysts treated by a professional.

Attempting to squeeze or pop a cyst can lead to:

Increased Risk of Infection

Bacteria from your fingers or the surrounding skin can infiltrate the cyst, leading to infection.

Spread of Infection

Squeezing an infected cyst can spread infection into the surrounding tissue.

Scarring

Picking or squeezing can damage the skin, potentially leading to scarring.

Reappearing Cysts

Cysts may reappear if the cyst wall remains after draining.

Potentially Pushing Debris Deeper

Squeezing may cause the cyst’s contents to go deeper into the skin, making it more challenging to treat and causing greater discomfort.
