According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 9,500 people receive a skin cancer diagnosis daily. One in five Americans will develop basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or malignant melanoma in their lifetime. While basal and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common form of skin cancer in the US, they are both preventable with early intervention. Malignant melanoma is becoming more common affecting patients from their late teen years to the elderly. Malignant melanoma can be fatal without early intervention
Some of the main sources of skin cancer prevention are applying broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (don’t forget your ears) before and during sun exposure and limiting your time in the sun between 10 AM and 2 PM. Protective clothing can also be worn. Early detection is crucial, so schedule annual skin exams with a dermatology provider and perform monthly self-exams. If a biopsy results in a cancerous lesion(s), our experts will create a treatment plan tailored to the type and location of the cancer and your needs.
Skin cancer treatments may include topical medications, surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, radiation therapy, cryotherapy, electrodesiccation, and curettage depending on the stage of skin cancer.

Discolored birthmarks, including port-wine stains, and flat or raised moles are easy to remove if they bother you. Congenital nevi, or moles you’re born with, vary in size. Acquired moles can be flat or raised, light-colored or dark, small or large, and may contain hair. Acquired moles are common with hormone shifts (pregnancy, puberty, and aging) Our experts will assess your mole or birthmark to recommend the best removal method with minimal scarring. Please schedule an appointment immediately if a mole changes shape, border, color, or texture, or becomes painful, itchy, inflamed, or crusty, as these could be signs of skin cancer.

Lipomas are non-cancerous, fatty tumors that typically appear on the head, neck, shoulders, and back. They are benign, slow-growing tumors characterized by round, mobile masses. There are various types of lipoma, and you should have them examined by a physician to ensure you don’t have liposarcoma, a type of cancer. While lipomas are generally harmless, some variants may grow rapidly or cause pain.
Depending on the lipoma’s size and location, a medical professional can typically remove it through small incisions in the overlying skin without harming the surrounding tissues. Upon removal, tissue will be sent to pathology to ensure it is benign.

Cyst Removal

Cysts are common, benign skin conditions that form soft, movable pockets filled with proteins, fluids, or other substances. They appear on the face, back, chest, and scalp. While often asymptomatic, cysts can become inflamed or infected, causing discomfort or pain.
If a cyst gets inflamed or infected, seek medical care promptly for drainage or removal. Treatment varies based on the cyst’s type, size, and location, sometimes requiring medication or cortisone injections.

Acne and Eczema

Acne can develop at any age, but it is most common among teenagers and young to middle-aged adults. While acne may result from factors like excess oil production, clogged pores, bacteria, genetics and hormones, its exact cause remains uncertain. Acne generally affects the face and shoulders, though it can also appear on the trunk, arms, legs, and buttocks.
Acne treatments typically take eight to twelve weeks to show significant improvement once you have implemented a prescription routine. You may need ongoing treatment to maintain clear, breakout-free skin. Options include topical or oral medications, laser or light-based technologies, and chemical peels. For cystic acne or stubborn acne that doesn’t improve with a medicated regimen, isotretinoin (accutane) can be a powerful and effective treatment option.
Eczema is a common condition that can affect anyone. Eczema results in a dry skin barrier with microscopic cracks that can worsen without treatment, leading to inflamed, discolored, scaly, and itchy skin. Effective eczema management involves addressing acute flare-ups and maintaining a treatment regimen for long-term control. We can address eczema discomfort with topical or systemic medications, light therapies, and avoiding your specific environmental triggers. Our goal is to help you find a treatment that works best for your goals and day to day life.

Photodynamic therapy combines light with a light-sensitive drug to treat skin cancers or other inflammatory skin conditions, including acne, psoriasis, rosacea, or sun damage. The remedy involves applying a photosensitizer to the area and then exposing it to specific light, which activates the drug with specific light wavelengths to address damaged cells.
PDT is less invasive than surgery, repeatable, typically causes minimal scarring, and is suitable for hard-to-reach areas. However, it may cause pain or skin reactions for some people.

It starts with flushing and progresses to persistent redness on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin. Symptoms include enlarged blood vessels, acne-like eruptions, and skin thickening. There is no cure, but our experts may recommend various treatments to reduce rosacea symptoms, including topical or oral medications, lasers, or helping you identify aggravating triggers.
